What is Dry Eye?

When eyes lose their ability to produce tears normally, it causes irritation and is one of the main reasons people schedule a visit to see an eye care professional. Dry eye is so common because it is caused by a variety of factors like age, environment, and screen time. With the right treatment, it is a very manageable condition.

What Causes Dry Eye?

There are several physical and environmental factors that can contribute to dry eye. It also commonly happens with age as tear glands slow down tear production – this is especially common in women going through menopause.

Tear quality (what keeps eyes moisturized) may also be the cause of dry eyes. Three important layers make up a normal tear – mucin, aqueous, and lipid layers – and they work together to provide and distribute moisture and prevent it from evaporating. If any of one is compromised, the eye may not get the nourishment and protection it needs. Tear evaporation (lack of lipid) is the most common cause of dry eye.

There’s also a correlation between diminished tear production and:

  • Antihistamines
  • Birth control pills
  • Diuretics
  • Cardiovascular medications
  • Pain relievers and anti-inflammatories
  • Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or thyroid problems

Relieving Dry Eyes

Dry Eye syndrome is a chronic condition that may not be completely curable. However, the comfort and the health of your eye can be improved using artificial tears. Mild dry eye symptoms may be treated with over-the-counter medications such as artificial tears, gels, and ointments. Consult with your eye care professional to determine the cause and a treatment strategy best for you.
